In the first 36 hours of this year's three-day Memorial Day weekend, two people died on Los Angeles County highways. Three have been killed in Orange County.
On Friday, a man was killed in unincorporated Val Verde. A pedestrian was hit at a Downey crosswalk Saturday afternoon on Imperial Highway near Brookshire Avenue.
There were three fatalities in Orange County, and CHP officers arrested 52 people for driving under the influence -- one less than the 2006 total.
The California Highway Patrol began reporting Friday at 6:01 p.m. and will conclude its tally at 6 a.m., according to a news release.
There have been 16 traffic fatalities throughout California in May, the same total as last year.
In Los Angeles County CHP officers arrested 208 motorists on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, up from last year's total of 143.
There have been 1,048 DUI arrests so far statewide, compared to 1,024 last year. Those figures are for CHP arrests only and do not include arrests or citations by other police agencies.
In San Diego County, there were 103 DUI arrests, just one less than the 2006 total. There were no traffic fatalities reported in the first 36 ours of the weekend.
