OXFORD, Maine -- A small plane overshot the runway at a western Maine airport and flipped, and the student pilot was taken to a hospital with head injuries.
Federal Aviation Administration investigators were expected to arrive at the Oxford County Regional Airport on Wednesday morning.
Officials said the single-engine Cessna 172 went off the runway at about 5 p.m. and flipped over in a swampy ditch about 100 feet from dozens of unoccupied manufactured homes.
The solo pilot was identified as Jaroslav Suchanek, of Waterville. He was admitted to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston with head injuries, but no other information about his condition was released.
Police say Suchanek, 44, was out of the plane and walking when rescuers arrived.
State Trooper Dan Hanson said Suchanek had flown from Central Maine Regional Airport in Norridgewock and was on a training flight to Oxford when the accident happened during landing. The flight was supposed to continue to Augusta and wind up in Norridgewock
